LODGING INFORMATION

Put-in-Bay is a unique vacation destination. We are located on a small resort island about 3 miles north of Port Clinton, Ohio in Lake Erie's western basin. Due to the shortened season -- many businesses know they have just 120 days to generate revenue each year -- many lodging businesses require a two-night minimum stay over the weekend and a three-night minimum over a holiday weekend.

There are several hotels that are owned by the same individual or family and all lodging is owned/operated by independent owners. You won't find a chain hotel here and the island has many bed and breakfast inns, cottages, private homes, condominiums and rooms or suites for rent as well.

Besides requiring a minimum stay on the island, each lodging business has its own Guest Policies that include regulations pertaining to unregistered guests, check-in and check-out times, quiet hours, etc. Each lodging business also has its own cancellation policy and before you hand over your credit card information, or send in your check, you should know exactly what the cancellation policy is for the place you are planning to stay.

It is important that you ask for the lodging's cancellation policy in writing prior to booking your reservation. Some lodging owners require a deposit equal to one-night's stay as a room deposit. This can range from under $100 to more than $300. We know that there are businesses that keep the entire deposit if you cancel your reservation within 14 or less days of your arrival date. Others keep $25-$50 of the deposit as a service fee and return the balance. Some have policies that give full refunds.

We strongly encourage you to know the lodging business' policy before you make a reservation in the event you have not visited the island before or are unfamiliar with the lodging establishment. Keep in mind that if the lodging's cancellation policy forfeits your entire deposit 7 to 14 days prior to arrival, what do you do if after arriving you decide you don't want to stay there.

The chamber receives complaints about the different cancellation policies and that is why we are making a point of explaining it here. Most people have traveled and stayed in hotels before and generally mainland hotels do not require a deposit. If you hold a room with a credit card as a guarantee and then fail to show up, chain hotels generally will keep the night's fee. But you generally also have until 6 p.m. or so the day of arrival to cancel without losing your deposit.

It also is prudent to have an idea of where you are staying. If you are not sure where a lodging establishment is located, we have two maps -- one of the downtown area and another of the entire island -- that shows where the different lodging is located. Sometimes it is difficult to remember names. If that's the case, check our online maps, use the information on the different lodging pages that link from this page and explore individual websites to see photos of the lodgings. If you have a question about location, or name and can't find it on our website, email us or call us.

Remember that once you sign the credit card receipt, you may have no recourse but to accept the lodging or lose your deposit. You may want to contact your credit card company to ask how they handle such disputes before you make your reservation.

Our goal is for all our visitors to have an enjoyable and memorable stay with us at Put-in-Bay. The chamber of commerce follows a strict policy of not recommending any member business over another. We do answer questions pertaining to business location, contact information, amenities such as pools, Internet access, restaurants on premise, 24-hour front desk, etc.

We do not maintain information on the individual businesses Guest Policies, cancellation policies, availability, in-room amenities or rates. The chamber sometimes has last minute availability, but only if the lodging owner has contacted us with the information. We do not maintain a waiting list for lodging.

Keep in mind that most private homes, condominiums and cottages rent by the week or the weekend. The best time to plan an overnight stay is from Sunday through Thursday night when there generally is no minimum stay requirement unless Sunday is part of a three-day holiday weekend.

Many bed and breakfast lodgings accept only couples on the weekends and visitors with children during the week. Some only accept couples at all times.

Of all the lodging operators on the island, 59 are Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce members and less than eight are not members. Some are not members by their choice, some by the chamber's. If you feel you have been treated unfairly by any member of the chamber of commerce you can file a complaint by contacting the Toledo Area Better Business Bureau.

The Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce currently has 159 full members. Our business community wants you to enjoy your island visit.  We hope to see you at the Bay real soon.
