GUEST POLICIES

The Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce has 58 lodging members who operate bed and breakfast inns, campgrounds, cottages, condominiums, hotels, motels and rent private homes.
The majority, if not all, require a deposit when making a reservation. If a check is required for the initial deposit and you fail to send it in time, your reservation may be cancelled. Be sure to follow up and make sure your deposit was received.
Also make sure you ask for and receive a copy of the lodging owner's "Guest Policies." These policies should outline a long list of "dos and don'ts" and also will tell you when you can check in, when you must check out, etc.
Be sure to ask questions before making your reservation. Here are some questions you might consider when choosing a place to stay:

  • What type of breakfast is served at your B&B. This can vary from a hot, full breakfast to cereal, toast and juice and anything in between.

  • When are quiet hours.

  • What are the office hours, or the hours the owner can be contacted during the day during your stay.

  • How late can you check in. Some lodging owners may not accommodate guests arriving after a certain time in the evening.

  • Is there a charge to unlock your room if you lock yourself out. Lodging owners may charge extra for certain services needed after the office has closed.

  • Can friends visit me in my room and if so, when is the earliest and latest they can be on the premises.

  • What is the maximum occupancy of a room, cottage, house, etc.

  • Are group discounts available and how many rooms must be booked to qualify.

  • What additional costs may be incurred as a guest, i.e. is there an additional charge for linens or can you provide your own.

  • Parking availability. Is there room for a boat trailer, large RV, etc.

  • Documents needed to bring a vehicle across on Miller Boat Line on the weekend. The ferry service requires proof of accommodations on weekends.

  • Alcohol policy. Ohio law states that hotels with liquor licenses are not allowed to permit guests to bring their own alcohol onto the premises, including the guest rooms. Know before you pack the cooler.

  • Any policies that may result in eviction from the property.

  • How long does it takes to have a deposit returned after your stay.

  • Cancellation policies. These differ from lodging owner to lodging owner.

  • Minimum stay. Most accommodations will rent for the night during the week, but require a two to three night minimum stay on the weekends and over holidays. Some holidays may not just be traditional national holidays, but special "island event holidays."

Be sure to ask about a lodging owner's Guest Policies before you confirm your reservation with a check or credit card. Don't make a reservation based on past experience renting on the mainland. Whenever and where ever you travel, you should always know the accommodation's guest policies before you reserve your room. Once you've sent in a deposit you may find it is not returnable.

PET FRIENDLY LODGING

Several island accommodations allow pets, however, none of the newer hotels allow animals. The following should be used as a guide. It is up to the individual lodging owner on whether pets are allowed and some accommodations that welcomed pets in the past have discontinued the practice. Be sure to call ahead and ask about your specific pet.

    PLACES WITH POOLS

Put-in-Bay does not have a "bathing beach" suitable for everyday use. Put-in-Bay Village Council currently is seeking funding to help build a sea wall to protect the small sandy beach at the end of Delaware Avenue near the Perry Memorial. Currently the small beach area is unprotected and debris, rocks, etc. are washed up daily. A stone beach is located at South Bass Island State Park.

There are lodging facilities with swimming pools.

Bay Lodging House, indoor-outdoor swimming pool.
BayShore Resort, swimming pool, conversation pool, 30-person whirlpool spa, outdoor bar.
Bird's Nest Resort, outdoor swimming pool.
Black Squirrel Bed & Breakfast, outdoor swimming pool.
Commodore Motel, outdoor swimming pool.
Put-in-Bay Resort & Conference Center, swimming pool & outdoor bar.
Wisteria Inn Bed & Breakfast has an outdoor hot tub.

MAKE RESERVATIONS EARLY

Put-in-Bay's many accommodations are generally full every weekend during the summer season. Because the weekends fill so quickly, it is important to make your reservations as early in the year as possible if you are planning to stay over the weekend.
If your ability to travel allows you to stay during the week, this is an excellent time to plan an island vacation. Weekdays are generally not as crowded as the weekends and a wider selection of lodging is available to choose from Sunday through Thursday. Many lodging owners require a two or three night minimum stay on weekends but do not have a minimum stay during the week.
Some cottages and private homes may rent only by the week at certain times of the year.
Most lodging owners do not accept reservations until after January 1 each year. If you have been calling and not reaching anyone, keep in mind they might not yet be taking reservations. Some island lodging owners may even have their telephones on vacation during the winter months. Not all lodging members live on the island year-round and since each business is individually owned and operated, not all lodging facilities begin accepting reservations at the same time.
Be sure to check the lodging websites for contact information. Many maintain both summer and winter contact numbers.
